Most of the people who farm in Burundi are women. So when BORA Alliance ran its training on Climate Smart Nutrition Gardens in Maramvya, the room was full of them.

The method is deliberately cheap. Compost instead of bought fertiliser. Mulch to hold water in the soil through the dry weeks. Crop rotation so the ground is never asked to give the same thing twice. Bio-fertiliser made from what is already on the farm.

More than 50 smallholder farmers have now established gardens, and they report better yields and more varied food at home. The First Vice President of Burundi visited the site to see the work.
